What? I Know What I Want!

And I wonder why I can’t find an apartment…

Wanted: 1 bedroom sunny apartment on lower Eastside or Eastside of Milwaukee. I would like to pay somewhere in the range of $550 - $600 and would be thrilled if parking would be included. I’d like a place to do my laundry, so coin-operated laundry on-site is essential and I’d prefer a porch of some sorts for me to sit on and enjoy the sounds of the city. I don’t have a pet at the moment, but it’d be nice to have the option at a later date and close to the lake would be ideal so I can take my beloved walks along the water. I’m not picky about kitchen appliances, as I don’t do a lot of cooking but I would love a dinning room or eat in kitchen with lots of windows for me to put a little bar table and two chairs. Hard wood floors are preferred, but I’d settle for carpeting and if I could find an old early century claw foot tub I’d be in heaven. Oh, and please have outward facing windows so that I may open them and both see and hear the busy city traffic. There is nothing worse to me than waking up and seeing another building staring me straight in the face. Square footage is not a priority, but complete separation between my living quarters and my sleeping quarters is essential. Please note: I am not willing to move to the suburbs, as I realize this sort of apartment is readily available there. I am not ready for children, mini-vans, and large yards. I remain a city girl for at least a few more years. Downtown apartments need only apply.

Please forward your listing at earliest convenience. In the mean time, I’ll be sitting here pulling my hair out as my hatred for apartment hunting deepens

Oh lady, good luck with that one. I hate to say it, but you are living in like 1995 if you think an apartment in any city is going for $550 to $600 a month with the amenities you're looking for! I'm apartment hunting right now in the city, one bedroom with parking, and I'm not finding much for under $1000! I wish you well, though! If I come across anything in my search, I'll send it your way as well!

I have actually managed to find a lot in the city for under $600 and they're all super cute with everything i'm looking for...except the most important, parking.

I do realize it's impractical to think i an get all of that into a $600 apartment downtown, but a girl can dream right?! The post was partly sarcastic...I do realize somewhere a few (read: a lot) of sacrafices are going to have to be made if I insist on living downtown =)

Good luck to you as well!

Christi, you can find good deals in the city. It happens everyday! Don't give up on your dreams! :) Mine happens to be of a washer/dryer in-house unit and a dishwasher...

ahhh an in-unit washer and dryer would be AWESOME!!!

Dear boss: I need a raise.

And that's really the downside, isn't it? Finding some place with ALL of the amenities needed? I, too, am now finding a bit more places for more reasonable prices, but each place lacks something big - parking, W/D, etc. But alas, as you said, sacrifices must be made, and so the search continues!! :)

What's wrong with the 'burbs? I'm single & hip (lol)! I live in a large two bedroom upper duplex, with a huge walk in closet in my bedroom, a big sunny eat in kitchen where my plants are thriving (although the counters & cupboards are lacking a bit), a laundry room, central air, my own parking area big enough for three cars, my own entrance, basic cable...all for $685! It didn't have everything on my wish list, like a garage or patio or allowing pets or heat included, but I've befriened my landlords who have two daughters about 10 years younger than me and they treat me like a third daughter in a way. They let me sit on their deck, lay in their hammock, or splash in their tiny pool. Their dog even greats me like I'm part of the family. It's home :o)

I feel your pain though. I've been in my place exactly a year now, and I spent several frustrating months trying to find a place that met my requirements. I actually ended up spending more than I wanted to, but it was so gorgeous, I couldn't pass it up. So I can't get a newer car for awhile...oh well.

If you want to live in Milwaukee, have you considered the Washington Heights neighborhood? You might be able to find most of what you are looking for there. And then you could take drool-inducing walks through the Washington Highlands :o)

haha Farrah there is absolutley nothing wrong the 'burbs, I'm sorry to have offended you but for me...i'd be bored. I love the sounds of the city, and the headache of traffic, and the close stores and shops and coffee shops and small bedrooms and.....it's just what I want right now. I want to be around action...not a quiet neighborhood with kids. But I hear the apartments are killer! =)

I have thought about the Heights and that's sort of my next step if downtown doesn't end up working out. I figure plan B will be to start looking in Bayview, Shorewood, and Washington Heights because well....I have to start compromising =)

I actually did find an ADORABLE one bedroom in that area, right across from one of my favorite houses in the Highlands. I may have to reconsider.

Don't worry, Christi, you didn't offend me. If I could live anywhere, ie, if money was no object, I'd live in the Third Ward. But, since I can't, I love my apartment, which is walking distance to Southridge :o) Believe me, I'm still city enough to hear the buses, motorcycles, sirens, etc.

Um, hi. I live in BEAVER DAM.

BEAVER. DAM.

How's THAT for a killer social life? I want to hear nothing of this "'burbs" or "downtown" business, because me? I get my thrills at the local Fleet Farm.

It's hot.

Move to Milwaukee Krista!!!

Although, I'm not sure why I'm so enthusiastic since my social life here is almost non-exist.

Christi said...

hahahaha Krista that just made me laugh out loud here at work.

Okay, you win.

The 'burbs aren't sounding so bad after all.

And you're right Farrah. Money IS an object and i think I just need to accept that and know that someday, I'll have the money to do what I really want to do (hopefully). I HAVE always liked Greenfield. =)

Beaver Dam...wow, that's a toss up between Madison, Milwaukee, Appleton...even Oshkosh.

Uh. OK?

Get a roommate. There are awesome places for $1200. We're renting an East Side condo now - just a year old.

I say people need to stop leaving anonymous comments. Own up to what you say or don't comment at all. I think I'm going to change that feature on my blog to not allow anonymous comments.

Living right downtown doesn't really appeal to me because of the parking hassles and noise. (When it's time to sleep, I want quiet!!)

However, when we lived out in Muskego for a year, we pretty much wanted to kill ourselves. No bookstores, no coffee shops, a half hour drive into the city. THAT'S what I call suburban hell.

Shorewood is the perfect mix of city and suburban life for me - the best of both worlds! :) But I can see how it isn't what you're looking for right now ....

I wish you (and Amanda and Mark!) luck in your search! And I second Krista moving to Milwaukee!!!!!

Amen to no anonymous commenters.

Suck it up, people.

Anonymous comments kick ass! :)

You will get fewer comments, then fewer readers if you take away the right to remain anonymous.

Take a look at the comments sections on stories on http://www.onmilwaukee.com. There used to be 100's of comments on each story before they made people register. The site is a lot less fun now.

Hmmm...it's more fun to make anonymous comments? I think you confuse "fun" with "cowardly".

I'm all for freedom of speech, but own up to your words and your opinions. Don't hide behind an anonymous tag.

Krista said...

Amen to that.

I'd rather take less comments and less readers if it means the people that ARE reading and commenting can own up to their thoughts.

For example, why does "anonymous comments kick ass!" need to be an anonymous comment? No one is going to chastise you for saying that anonymous comments kick ass. We are, however, going to chastise you for commenting anonymously.

You don't need to register on Blogger to leave an identifying comment. Your comments will also gain some credibility.

I'm just sayin.'

Why be anonymous when you can just make up a name?

Anonymous said...

I second that! In alias vs. anonymous...alias should win hands down!
